Hi,
I have a 21 week old Wheaten Terrier. He's a good pup and he's learning the basics (come, sit, stay etc.) pretty well UNTIL the cat walks by. Now, to be fair he doesn't immediately give chase anymore - he's (mostly) settled down to sniffing first but after he gets on the cat's nerves and she runs away, he gives chase and then he is difficult to reign in. He's pretty intense when he's on the hunt.
Do you have any advice for getting him to ignore her altogether?

Thanks,
Bill

Thank you for your question! You are wise to be concerned about this behavior now, before your puppy gets older.

Start with scent mingling. Detailed instructions are on our website under training tips.

Make sure that you teach the ‘wait’ and ‘leave it’ commands. Use your leash in the house so that you can catch your dog and enforce these commands.

Enlist a helper to help you desensitize your puppy to cats moving away from him. Have your helper hold your cat with his tail towards the pup as he quickly moves the cat away. You work with your puppy to ‘wait’, ‘leave it’, then settle down. If you think that your cat is in danger from the pup then use the command ‘no’ instead of ‘leave it’.

You will find detailed instructions for all of these commands in our podcasts. I hope this is helpful. Keep us informed of your progress. Thank you, Margaret Davis
